The Coton pup you acquire can and should be CTCA Registered if sold to you by a CTCA Code of Ethics Breeder. It's mandatory in our Code of Ethics that CTCA breeders must register your puppy. You, in turn, will receive the pup's Official CTCA Pedigree, an important document for you to have whether your puppy is "Potentially Breedable" or "Not Breedable." It will show your pup's heritage and conformation information.
Your Official CTCA Pedigree also means that your puppy is in the CTCA database and that the club can track its genetics, if necessary. Our pioneering work with Coton de Tulear genetic health allows us to track disorders and to help buyers and their pups should there be any question of health within particular matings. This greatly benefits puppies, buyers, breeders and the gene pool.
The CTCA accepts only CTCA Pedigrees for registering a puppy. We used to accept selected pedigrees from other clubs (e.g., the European FCI registries) until we discovered that some of those registering bodies were knowingly registering non-Coton pups (1/2 breeds mainly) as "purebred Cotons." So, the CTCA is now a closed registry. We aim to keep this breed pure and free of some of the genetic problems that plague other breeds such as the Havanese or the Bichon Frise (two breeds that unscrupulous breeders mate with Cotons).
DELAYS?
The CTCA registry has suffered from long delays in the past because the CTCA was operating without sufficient funds. That problem has been partially corrected. Backlogged registrations (e.g., several hundred submitted between December 2003 and March 15th, 2004) will be completed and mailed to buyers in September, 2004, or before. Registrations submitted today, at the appropriate fee schedule, are being processed in less than 50 days (and are guaranteed to be processed in 90 days or less).
Some CTCA Breeders recently had the CTCA send them buyers for their puppies, then these breeders left the club and refused to register their pups with the CTCA. The buyers who had every reason to believe that they were buying a CTCA puppy were stranded. This is, to us, an unacceptable situation. The CTCA will not abandon these buyers and their pups. If your breeder is no longer listed on the CTCA's Code of Ethics Breeders List, please contact us to see how we can work together to register your puppy (call 607-775-0004).
